Ralph Waldo Emerson was the founder of Transcendentalism. Emerson and "Henry David Thoreau" believed that people were born with an inner sense to recognize moral truths (or conscience). They were individualists. If the government passed a law they did not agree with they would resist it. Thoreau wrote books and articles encouraging people to disobey unjust government laws through non-violent acts called "Civil Disobedience".
Civil Disobedience
"Civil" means organized, peaceful, and purposeful. Civil disobedience has a message about justice in an unjust situation. (See Dr. King's explanation under the "Revolution Unit) Thoreau would not pay his taxes in protest of the Mexican war and slavery. |
