The Civil War………………...
"A house divided cannot stand…..Abraham Lincoln 1857
By the late 1850's, the country was divided over what was most important for the nation and the issue of slavery. A new "Republican Party" takes shape and nominates Abraham Lincoln as its nominee for president. He runs under the platform that opposes the extension of slavery in the new territories, but allows it to exist in the South. Democrats could not decide on a nominee, splitting the vote and giving Lincoln the win in 1860. He did not win a single southern state. Southerners were outraged over his win. South Carolina immediately secedes followed by 6 other states. Texas also secedes despite opposition by Governor Sam Houston.
During Lincoln's first inaugural address, as he was sworn in as President, he reassured southerners that he would not interfere with slavery in their states. He also warned against secession based on the constitutional idea that "the union of these states is perpetual"(forever), and seceding from the union would be an unlawful act. He promised to do everything to preserve the "UNION"!
Lincoln won a second term as president in 1864. His second inaugural address was different than the first. The focus of the war was not just about preserving the union any more, it was about slavery. He stated that southern slave owners were the cause of the war not ending because they want to hold onto their slaves and want to spread slavery into the new territories. By this time he had presented the Emancipation Proclamation (1862) freeing all slaves in the rebelling states [not in the border states-seen as a reward for not seceding]. There were no slaves in the North or new territories.
The Emancipation Proclamation had 2 important outcomes- 1) slaves began fleeing the southern plantations, disrupting the agricultural economy, 2) ended possibilities of help from the French and British to the south who supplied them with cotton (Slavery was condemned by both countries).
As the war was ending, Lincoln rallied his supporters in Congress to pass the 13th Amendment. This officially ended slavery in the United States. As the South began reuniting with the Union, they would do so without slavery.
